Lilacs and Late Bloomers

Monday, May 01, 2017

Happy May Day!  Spring has started to poke her head around the corner here in Western PA, and I couldn't be happier!  (We're just going to ignore the cold that's supposed to happen this weekend, k?)

Spring has brought something beautiful and fragrant to my yard this year.  Something that I have been awaiting for over eight years:  LILACS!!

Of course, you know there's a story here, right? See, when I was growing up, there was this GINORMOUS lilac bush in our back yard.  To my eight year-old eyes, it seemed to be 20 feet tall.  Truly, I have no idea how large it actually was, but to me, it was huge!  Anyway, I LOVE the scent it gave off every year.  I loved it so much that I always said when I grew up, I'd have a lilac bush just as fragrant.

Fast forward to 2008 when the mister and I bought our first house.  One of the first things I did?  I planted a lilac bush just behind our deck so that I could sit and smell the scent anytime I wanted.  And then I waited.

And I waited.

I waited for 8.5 years to get flowers on this bush!  8.5 years!

I almost pulled this bush last year. The leaves were beautiful; the bush was healthy. But in 8 summers, it had NEVER bloomed! Not even a single bud. So I thought about pulling it and starting over with something else, maybe even something non-plantlike. But I really really really love lilacs...and I really didn't want to give up on my dream... So I let it go.

And this year, it flowered!

Guess what?  Late bloomers happen in more than just plants.  Sometimes people can be late bloomers as well.  Some people are overnight successes, and some, well, aren't.  And that's ok.

Sometimes, despite doing everything right, success can take awhile - sometimes much longer than you think it *should*.  Sometimes, it takes a little longer to get everything right, to find a rhythm.

Guess what?  That's ok, too.

Success - whatever your definition of success is - is out there.  Sometimes it takes better soil or better light or even some pruning...but it is out there.  And when we finally get the chance to bloom?  We'll fill OUR little corners of the world with beauty and delightful fragrance - just like those lilacs.
