Default Settings - Choose to Upgrade!

Ok, fair warning:  I'm about to sound like a crazy nerd here.  Showing my true colors and all that.

transform your mind renew your mindAre you familiar with default settings?  Do you know what they are?

A default setting is most often used in hardware or software.  It can be a preset choice in configuration, a certain application to for file types, a particular browser for your phone or computer...

So, that being said, who out there accepts all the default settings when setting up a program or your phone or your computer, etc?  Guess what?  I don’t.  I mean, I love my Mac, but Safari?  Not my preferred browser.  Text files?  Let me open them in Wordpad instead of Notepad on my PC.  I prefer to choose which files get uploaded into certain applications.  And on and on and on.

Can I ask you something?  If we are all about customizing our experiences with our electronic devices, why are we so quick to accept our own default settings?  Why are we content to take them as they come?

Bear with me a moment, ok?  I promise this really does tie in.

Today's workout left me feeling weak and ashamed.  Not because I didn't do it, not because I haven't been working out...Because both of those statements are false.  I felt weak because I have spent the first quarter of this year working on my cardiovascular endurance (shifty look at Shaun T) instead of strength gains.  As a result, the weights I could previously put up were nowhere to be seen.  I was, basically, starting as an "experienced beginner."  As such, today's workout - day 1 of LIIFT4 if you were wondering - was TOUGH.  My arms are still sore tonight, hours later.

There are two choices we have when things get tough:
  1. Quit.
  2. Lean in and embrace the hard.
Guess which one is my personal “default setting”? (HINT:  It’s NOT to push harder... )  Most things have come easy to me; so when things get hard, I tend to give up and find something else that is easy for me again. Can anyone else relate?

But you know what I want MORE than to quit?  To change.  To get better.

And now it's time for some truth:
  • You cannot change your life without changing your habits.
  • You cannot change your habits without changing your mind.
  • You cannot change your mind without understanding your mindset and its contributing factors (your "default settings) and choosing to reconfigure to something else.
Changing your mindset - transforming your mind - is the key to changing anything in your life.
